function of the thyroid gland

A

Take iodine from blood and combine with tyrosine, convert it to T3 and T4

Store T3 and t4 until release into blood with TSH release from pituitary

Only a small amount of T3 and T4 are bound to protein. The FREE portion is the true determinant of thyroid status.
