Adult Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (review w/ handout) Flashcards
Obesity BMI
30+ kg/m2
(body wt in kg/height (m2))
underweight 40)
Causes of obesity
-long term positive energy balance (fat stores)
Health problems associated w/ obesity
pulm disease NAFLD GAll bladder disease gynecologic abnormaltities cancer phelbitis skin changes gout Coronary heart disease \++more
Metabolic syndrome
-almost always have abdominal obesity
When have >3 (waist, tri, HDL, BP, fasting glucose) Metabolic abnorm: glucose BP lipids low grade inflammatory state
Waist (abdominal obesity):
Men: >102 cm
Women:>88 cm
TG:>150 (dyslipidemia)
HDLC:
Men: 130/>85 (either or)
Fasting glucose: >100 pre-diabetes
Waist Circumference
Abdominal adiposity: independent predictor of risk for DM, HTN, CAD, and dyslipidemia
>35 inches F high risk
>40 inches M are high risk
BMI and waist circumference both predict development of weight related issues
Abdominal obesity
-release FFA into blood stream–> liver, and causing insulin resistance
Metabolically healthy obese
-BMI over 30 and no metabolic abnormalities (1/3), but over time, likely develop metabolic abnormalities/complications
