What is the definition of learning disability?
Significantly sub-average intellectual functioning i.e. a score of an I.Q of below 70 on a standardised tests of intelligence
Significant impairment of adaptive/social functioning
Age of onset before 18 years of age
What does having a learning disability mean?
Having a learning disability means that the person will have difficulties understanding, learning and remembering new things and generalising any learning to new situations. Because of these difficulties with learning, the person may have difficulties with a number of social tasks including, communication, self care, awareness of health and safety etc.
What is a learning difficulty?
A problem which affects somebody’s ability to learn.
Includes dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, Aspergers
No global impairment of social functioning
IQ > 70
Can be diagnosed at any age
