Adult I Exam 3 - Thyroid & Parathyroid Flashcards
Thyroid Hormones
TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)
Thyroxine (T4)
Triiodothyronine (T3)
Free T4
Thyroid Gland
Control of metabolism
Calcium and phosphate balance
Function of Thyroid hormones
- Fetal development (congenital cretinism)
- Increases BMR > Increased O2 consumption (RR) >heat production
- Promotes sufficient pituitary secretion of GH & gonadotropins
- Regulates protein, CHO, fat metabolisms
- Cardiac effects (increase rate & force, increase CO2, increase O2 demand)
- increase RBC production
- Increase bone formation, decrease bone reabsorption of Ca+
- Acts as insulin antagonist
Changes in Thyroid with Aging
General decrease in metabolism less cold tolerant decreased appetite decreased BP & HR *Difficult to dx/differentiate from Hypothyroidism
Thyroid Assessment
Pt/Fam/Nutrition Hx
Current health problems, changes in: energy levels, elimination, sexual/reproductive function, physical appearance
Physical Assessment
-Verbal response, dull/flat affect
-Prominent forehead, hairline, hair loss, round/puffy face, eyes (exothalmos), skin, fingernails
-Tremors
Enlarged Thyroid (via Palpation)
Hyperthyroidism Causes (risk factors)
- Autoimmune
- Infection, stress
- Overdose of hypothyroidism meds
