- fractured tooth crown or existing crown structure
- large RCT access
- posterior tooth after RCT
- large existing but failing restoration
- large caries encompassing the tooth
- recurrent caries under existing large filling or crown
- fixed/removable partial denture needing retention/rests
- tooth/teeth need recontouring
