Adrenergic Drugs Flashcards
Norepinephrine
BP control in certain acute hypotensive states
Epinephrine
Tx for anaphylactic shock, cardiogenic shock, prolongs action of anesthetics, and a topical hemostatic agent
Dopamine
Tx for congestive heart failure
Alpha 1 agonists
Phenylephrine, oxymetazoline, naphazoline, (pseudo)ephedrine
Tx to reduce nasal congestion, used in eye drops for red eyes, to increase BP in hypotensive states
Clonidine, Guanabenz
Alpha 2 agonist
Tx as antihypertensive agent and for opioid and ethanol withdrawal
Isoproterenol
Beta 1/2 non-selective agonist
Tx as a cardiac stimulant
Dobutamine
Selective B1 agonist
Increases contractive force (not heart rate)
Ionotropic agent
Used for treatment of CHF and cardiogenic shock
Albuterol, Metaproterenol, Terbutaline
Selective B2 agonist
Used for Tx COPD, asthma
Ritodrine
Selective B2 agonist
Used for uterine relaxation
Can cause syncope because of massive vasodilation
Dopamine
Used at low doses to increase cardiac contractile force
For treatment of neurogenic shock
Phenoxybenzamine
Non-competitive a1 and a2 receptor antagonist (long duration)
Used for treatment of pheochromocytoma
Side effect is orthostatic hypotension
Phentolamine
Competitive a1 and a2 receptor antagonist (short duration)
Used for treatment of pheochromocytoma
Dental use for reversal of local anesthetics
DOC for overdose of alpha agonists
Side effect is orthostatic hypotension
Prazosin, Terazosin
Selective a1 receptor antagonist
Antihypertensive drugs
Side effect: orthostatic hypotension
Preferred for use over phenoxybenzamine and phentolamine
Propanolol, Nadolol, Timolol, Pindolol
Non-selective B1/B2 antagonists
Used for Tx of hypertension, angina, migraine, anxiety, MI, arrhythmias, stage fright, CHF
Atenolol, Metoprolol
Cardio-selective B1 antagonist
Used for Tx of hypertension, angina, migraine, anxiety, MI, arrhythmias, stage fright, CHF
