Dopamine properties
- Found in basal ganglia of CNS
* Dopamine D1, D2 receptor
Adrenaline blood pressure effect
- Increase BP
* Increased force and HR
Adrenaline vascular effects
- Cold hands and feet via cutaneous vasoconstriction
- Added to local anaesthetic stop prolong duration action
- Increased blood flow to skeletal muscle
Adrenaline cardiac effects
- Increased HR
* Cardiac arrhythmia
Adrenaline respiratory effects
- Bronchodilation
* Uses: asthma, anaphylaxis, angioedema
Adrenaline CNS effects
- Apprehension
- Tremor
- Restlessness
- Headache
Adrenaline metabolic effects
- Increased glucose and lactate in plasma (β action on liver)
- Inhibit insulin secretion (α₂)
- Increased glucagon secretion (β₂)
- Increased FFA (β action in fat cell)
Adrenaline side effects
- Restlessness
- Tremor
- Throbbing headache
- Cerebral haemorrhage
- Palpitation
- Cardiac arrhythmia
Adrenaline contraindication
Patient using non-selective β blockers: unopposed α-effect = hypertension
α₁ selective agonists action
Blood vessels -> vasoconstriction and increase BP
Phenylephrine use
- Nasal decongestion
* Pupil dilatation in eye
Methoxamine, metaraminol use
- Hypotension
* Shock
Midodrine use
- Autonomic insufficiency
* Postural hypotension
Clonidine use
- Produce hypotension, sedation, bradycardia
- Treat hypertension
- SE: rebound hypertensive on abrupt withdrawal
Methyldopa use
- Lowers BP
* Treat hypertension
Hypertension medication
- Clonidine
- Methyldopa
- Guanfacine
- Guanabenz
Pre-anaesthetic medication
• Dexmedetomidine
Pre-operative sedation, anxiolysis, analgesia, drying of secretion
Glaucoma medication
• Apraclonidine
• Brimonidine
(Reduce IOP by decreasing aqueous humour formation)
Spasticity medication
• Tyzanidine
as muscle relaxant for spasticity associated with cerebral and spinal disorder
Dobutamine use
- Short term infusion in CV decompensation
* SE: increase BP, tachycardia
β adrenergic agonist MOA
Action on β receptor, stimulates adenylyl cyclase via Gs, increase cAMP
Isoprenaline use
- Bradycardia
* Heart block
