Adrenal Disorders Flashcards
Primary Adrenal Insufficiency
Addison’s disease
Addison’s disease
partial or complete failure of adrenocortical function
what does Addison’s disease result in?
decreases production of cortisol and aldosterone
etiology of Addison’s disease
autoimmune processes, infection, neoplasm or hemorrhage
signs and symptoms of Addison’s disease
BROWN HANDS
Brown pigmentation Reduced strength Orthostatic hypotension Weight loss Neurosis (anxiety, sadness or depression, anger, irritability, mental confusion, low sense of self-worth) Hyponatremia Anorexia Nausea Dehydration Sudden death
Secondary adrenal insufficiency
result from prolonged steroid therapy, rapid withdrawal of drugs and hypothalamic or pituitary tumors
signs and symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome
MORE CUSH
Moon face Osteoporosis Retention of water Elevated BP Central Obesity Unusual menstruation Skin Striae Hypernatremia and Hyperglycemia
Cushing’s syndrome
results from chronic and excessive production of cortisol from the adrenal cortex
etiology of Cushing’s syndrome
over administration of corticosteroids
benign or malignant adenomas
Cushing’s disease etiology
pituitary tumor w/ increased secretion of ACTH
PT implications for Cushing’s syndrome and disease
caution 2nd to impaired wound healing/bruised easily
slow progressive WB and precautions w/ mobilization 2nd to osteoporosis
PT implications for Addison’s disease and secondary adrenal insufficiency
slow progression of exercise
medication complications w/ long term steroid use (similar to Cushing’s)
fall risk 2nd to hypoglycemia and ortho hypo
