Where is Adrenaline produced?
A
Chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla of the adrenal glands.

What is a Phaeochromocytoma?
A
A tumour of the chromaffin cells that secretes unregulated and excessive amounts of Adrenaline.

A
A catecholamine hormone and neurotransmitter that stimulates the SNS.

Associations of Phaeochromocytoma (3).
A
- MEN II - 25% are familial.
- Neurofibromatosis.
- von-Hippel Lindau Syndrome.

10% Rule (3).
A
- Bilateral.
- Cancerous.
- Extra-Adrenal (commonest : adjacent to bifurcation of aorta).

Clinical Presentation of Phaeochromocytoma (5).
A
- Anxiety.
- Sweating.
- Headache.
- Hypertension.
- Palpitations, Tachycardia, Paroxysmal AF.
* fluctuating when tumour secretes adrenaline.

Investigations of Phaeochromocytomas (2).
A
- 24 Hour Urine Catecholamine.
2. Plasma Free Metanephrine (breakdown product with a longer half-life than Adrenaline).

Management of Phaeochromocytoma (3).
A
- Alpha Blockers - Phenoxybenzamine.
- B-Blockers after Established on A-Blockers.
- Adrenalectomy - definitive management.
- Control medically before surgery.
