adrenal and thyroid diseases Flashcards
zona glomerulosa steroids
Mineralocorticoids
zonae fasciculata/reticularis steroids
glucocorticoids
adrenal androgens
glucocorticoids
adrenal cortical steroid
carbohydrate metabolism
major type: hydrocortisone/cortisol
Mineralocorticoids
adrenal cortical steroid
Electrolyte-water homeostasis
major type: aldosterone
Endogenous corticosteroid
aldosterone and hydrocortisone/ cortisol
synthetic corticosteroid
prednisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, betamethasone, fludrocortisone
mech of action
transcriptional regulation- changes of protein level
Glucocorticoid receptor
widespread expression and broad effects
low affinity for aldosterone
mineralocorticoid receptor
restricted expression: abundant in renal distal tubules and collecting ducts
equal sensitivity to both cortisol and aldosterone
Corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG)
binds >80% of circulating cortisol, 20% is available and loosely bound to albumin
adoosterone does not bind to CBG, short half life
dexamethasone doesnt bind to CBG, 100% active
cortisol and cortisone
- short acting
- considerable salt-retaining activity
Prednisone, prednisolone, mehtylprednisolone
intermediate acting
intermediate anti-inflammatory and salt retaining activity
dexamethasone, betamethasone
long acting
maximal anti inflamamatory, minimal salt retaining
