Adrenal Flashcards
Adrenal medulla is an
extension of neuronal cells (chromaffin cells)
Chromaffin cells
found in adrenal glands and in groups of cells called ganglia
5 steroid hormones in adrenal cortex
Glucocorticoids
Mineralocorticoids
Progesterone
Androgens
Estrogens
Glucocorticoids
Increases protein and fat breakdown and conversion to glucose
Mineralocorticoids
hormones that regulate mineral levels
Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone
The axis where it responds to the drop in blood pressure. The reabsorption of salt and water as well as the vascular changes to respond to blood pressure
Aldosterone
acts on kidneys to increase the transcription of transporters for sodium and chloride
Cortisol is a
glucocorticoid
Zona reticularis
Secretes sex steroids mostly androgens and DHEA
Adrenal androgens
Responses to the ACTH by the anterior pituitary and have weak adrenergic activity (DHEA).
DHEA
Acts as a precursor to produce testosterone and estrogen
