- Belief ones behaviour cannot determine desired outcome.
- Cannot bridge gap between action they’d like to take and what they are capable of
- Belief that one doesn’t have the necessary skills or means to accomplish a goal.

- When social norms deteriorate and no longer act as a guide for personal beaviour
- Difficulty identifying dominant values of society
- No connection between onseself and the rules that govern one’s behvaiour

Alienation almost always leads to social isolation and complete withdraw as they prefer to be alone all the time.
Self-estrangement
State of emotional and psychological being in which one denies personal interests and prefers to be disengaged.

- Girls are more likely to attempt suicide than boys

- Victim may feel isolated and alienated which can lead to sucicidal thoughts if bullying is prolonged

Not supported by a cohesive social group; overpowering sense of personal responsibility = guilt over moral weakness/failure;ostracized;isolated and helpless in times of stress; social group has little effect on the individual
