- Diffusion
- Foreclosure
- Moratorium
- Achievement
the individual is overwhelmed by the task of achieving an identity and does little to accomplish the task
diffusion
the individual has a status determined by the adults rather than by personal exploration
foreclosure
examining different alternatives but has yet to find one thats satisfactory
moratorium
has explored alternatives and has deliberately chosen a specific identity
achievement
Self-absorption that Is characteristic of teenagers as they search for identity
adolescent egocentrism
Feeling that one’s behavior isconstantly being seen by peers
imaginary audience
The belief that one’s feelings or experiences are unique
personal fable
The belief that misfortunates cannot happen to oneself
illusion of invulnerability
The belief that the self is the focus of reality and everything and everyone else only exists when required (i.e. when being observed by the self).

ethnic identity
Three phases to achieving an ethnic identity
- Ethnic roots are unimportant to them
- Exploring their ethnic heritage’s impact and learning cultural traditions
- Development of a ethnic self-identity
- They are skilled in domains they value (sports, academics, music, etc.)
- They believe peers think highly of them
- Parents are affectionate and involved
- Parents set reasonable expectations and are willing to discuss rules and discipline
adolescents’ self worth is higher when they have those.
Being sexually active is predicted by
- Parents not monitoring adolescents
- peer approval and believing peers are having sex
- greater physical maturity
- living in poverty
