Adobe Illustrator
A professional illustration software application- you can create everything from simple graphics, icons, and text to complex and multilayered illustrations. - for page layouts, multimedia presentations or on the web.
Dialog Box
Can change size, width, height- page orientation, unit of measure, and color
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (used for print projects)
RGB
Red, Green, Blue: Used for projects that will appear on screens
Precision
Key to good design- can get better precision using points and picas
Point
1/72 of an inch
Pica
12 pt or 1/6 of an inch.
Preferences
Use to set units of measure- in edit menu
Title Bar
Contains the name of your document, magnification level, and color mode.
Menu Bar
Includes all of the illustrator menus
Black Triangle
Leads to sub menu
Ellipsis
Followed by dialog box
Artboard
Area bound by a solid line, which you create your artwork- can be as large as 227 x 277
Scratch Area
Area outside the artwork where u store objects before placing them on artwork - will not print
Tools Panel
Contains tools that let you create, select, and manipulate objects
Tiny Black Triangle
Indicates “hidden” tools behind that tool
Zoom Text Box
Displays current magnification level
Status Bar
Contains a list arrow menu from which you can choose a status line with info about current tool
Panels
Windows containing features for modifying and manipulating Illustrator objects. - arranged in groups
Docking Panels
Allows you to arrange multiple panels or panel groups vertically
Tab key
Hides and unhides panels
Outline Curve
Shows the skeleton of your work - lines and curves
Preview
Shows complete work - command Y
Zoom

Hand Tool
(hold spacebar) allows you to move dartboard
Bounding Box
Eight hollow white squares that show an object is selected
Bitmap Image
Created using square or rectangular grid of colored squares called pixels
Resolution
The number of pixels in a given inch
Resolution Dependent
Pixels must be small enough to create an image with the illusion of continuous tone
Vector Graphics
Created with lines and curves and are defined by mathematical objects called vectors
Paths
Anchor points & line segments together that are made up of these vector graphics
Vectors
Often used to create logos or line art
Resolution Independent
They are not created with pixels, this is no resolution
X
Switches between fill and stroke mode
“None”
Swatch with red line through it is called this - and used as a fill for a hollow object- any object w/ out a stroke
Grouping
Object allows you to move many objects as 1 - to group- go to object, group
Smart Guides
Temporary guides that can be turned on and off in view menu- and hello you move and align objects in relation to other objects.
Scale, Rotate, and Reflect Tools
The fundamental transform tools.
Reflect Tool
To flip an object over an imaginary axis
Transform
Repeats the pervious transformation
Direct Selection Tool
Selects individual anchor points or single paths of an object- can distort with this tool
