What should u be looking aat during admission

A

-Womans condition
-If birth imminient (if so transfer to birthing suite)
-Wellbeing
-Acknowledge womans exxcitement
-Explore antenatal records
-Agree on EDD
-Review history (allergies, conditions, surg, prev preg etc)
-Frequency of contractions
-How womans responding to them
-Palpate
-Fetal activity

How to assess contractions?

A

-Palpate uterus directly for strength +length of contractions
-Fetal activity
-Get consent
-Dont speak duuring
-Observe womans response to contractions

What should u check when doing VE

A

-See if membranes are intact/ruptured
Colour odour and vol of liqor
-See if meconium present

How to assess significance of meconium

A

Light staining is less of a concern.

-Dark green/black and/or thick and sticky =fresh and cud b more serious marked intrauterine hypoxia or acidosis

-Can be a marker of fetal comprimise

Is an admission CTG reccommended?

A

Evidence doesnt support the use for low/normal risk women as women r more likely to have CS if they have an admission CTG.

Its associated with incrs in use of continuous fetal monitoring and fetal blood sampling during labour.
