What are 5 points to consider in responding to a complaint?
Discuss w MDO, make personal contact, validate concerns and apologise, document discussion, follow up with written response - description of events, apology, description of changes.
When is mandatory reporting of colleagues required?
Reasonable belief of impairment - intoxication whilst practising, significant departure from accepted professional standard, sexual misconduct.
What must be considered when a patient is refusing treatment?
Patient can understand, retain and communicate decision. Document decision and actions taken. Pt understands risks.
What should be done if a patient is lost to followup?
Reasonable attempts made to contact patient depending on severity of result. Try different methods (phone, e-mail, letter), document attempts, contact NOK, emergency services, pathology/radiology.
At what age(s) can teenagers manage their own healthcare?
> 14yo usually make decisions, Gillick competent if understand what is proposed. Online to health record and medicare claims relinquished from parents at age 14.
What is the age of sexual consent in Victoria?
No sex < 12. 12-15 can have consenting relationship if age difference < 2 years. 16-17 - not with carer/guardian. Mandatory reporting of abuse for < 16yo.
What are some strategies to use with aggressive patients?
If not in danger, remain calm and confident. Use reflective questioning, assure patient you are trying to help, avoid intense eye contact or crossing arms. If danger: duress, police, ask patient to leave.
How to manage gifts from patients.
Should be discouraged. Document gift in notes, explain won’t change medical care. Discuss with practice, discuss with MDO
What are the features of SPIKES in breaking bad news?
Setting (private, who present). Perception (check sequence of events/symptoms and want they want to know/expect) Invitation (want results?) Knowledge (warning shot - bad news, clear simple language in sizable chunks). Emotions/empathy - I can see this is a shock, I’m sorry. Strategy/summary - check understanding, plan for review, summarise info.
When is a workcover claim approved and what is the implication of this?
Within 28 days of lodgement, after certificate. If approved, employer cannot fire patient for this within 12 months, must find suitable task.
What are some responses to requests for alternative test ordering?
Explain different approaches in clinical medicine, investigations only ordered if clinically appropriate, unnecessary tests can cause harm, alternative practitioner can order tests themselves, arrange clinically indicated tests after assessment.
What are the 3 categories of out of home care for children?
Kinship/relative care; foster care; residential care.
What processes can be implemented to ensure results are followed up?
Software reminder/recalls, recall policy, audits, designated followup staff. Doctors who order tests are responsible for result.
What components of history are important in a driving assessment? What further assessments can be done?
History of accidents, medication/treatment adherence, stroke, diabetes, syncope, sleep disorders, seizures. Specialist review, OT driving assessment, collateral from relatives with consent.
What physical examinations can be performed in a driving assessment?
Visual acuity (6/12 private, 6/9 commercial), visual fields, hearing assessment, coordination/mobility.
