List key difficulties with being diagnosed with ADHD
Impaired response inhibition, impulse control, and capacity to delay gratification. Excessive task-irrelevant activity. Sustained attention and persistence of effort. Remembering to do things (working memory). Delayed development of internal voice and rule-following. Emotion regulation, motivation, and arousal. Variability in task performance.
Prevalence of ADHD
- 3-7% of children
- common in boys (3:1)
- universal among human pop.

Who is at risk for ADHD?
hx of prenatal alcohol or tobacco-smoke exposure, premature delivery or significantly low birth weight, or significant trauma to the frontal regions of the brain
Etiology
80% genetic
Non-genetic causes
difficulties during pregnancy, prenatal exposure to alcohol and tobacco smoke, prematurity of delivery and significantly low birth weight, excessively high body lead levels, and post-natal injury to the prefrontal regions of the brain
What are the different types of ADHD?
Inattentive Type, Hyperactive Type and Combined Type
Inattentive Type
Be able to explain the symptoms
Daydreaming, passiveness, sluggishness, difficulty w focusing, slow processing of info, mental fogginess and confusion, social quietness, problems remembering. Long verbal pauses in conversations.
Hyperactive Type
Impulsive and hyperactive w/o difficulties in attention and concentration
