ADHD Flashcards
What is ADHD?
Inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity, and motor activity.
ADHD has an overwhelming amount of evidence that suggests it’s a neurological disease. True or false?
True
What are some ofthe neurological differences in people who have ADHD?
-Smaller volume
-Smaller corpus callosum
What are some of the ways we could measure the genetic contribution of different disorders?
- Family studies
2 . Adoption studies - Twin studies
What do family studies do?
They help tell if a disorder runs in the family. The person who has the disorder is called the proband. If both the person and mother have the disorder, it is called a concordance.
What do adoption studies do?
We compare the concordance rate of biological relatives with adoptive relatives.
What is done in twin studies when it comes to etiology?
There is a comparison in monozygotic (identical) and duzygotic (fraternal) twins.
What are some treatments for people with ADHD?
- Stimulant medication
- Parent management training
- Educational intervention
What are the different deficits related to ADHD?
Deficits in motivation
Delayed rewards do work on a kid with ADHD
Deficits in self-regulation
Deficits in arousal
Deficits in executive functions
What are the different treatments for people with ADHD?
- Stimulant medication
- Parent management training
- Education intervention
What does stimulant medication do?
Decrease motor activity and increase focus. The effects are temporary and only occur when the person is taking the medication.
What is parent management training?
This is when parents of children who have ADHD go to meeting where they learn about the prevalence, symptoms, and cause of ADHD.
They would be given strategies that help manage their child’s behavior.
What is educational intervention?
Find ways to accommodate children who have ADHD. This includes managing disruptive classroom behavior and teaching prosocial and self-regulating behaviors.
What is ediology?
The study of the cause or origin of something.
Name at least two diagnostic criteria for ADHD.
-A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or
development
-Symptoms must be present before the age of 12
-The symptoms must be present in two or more settings.
