A
  • Allow for new additions/alterations to be different from the older structure, but mustbe complementary in massing, size, scale, and architectural features
  • Criteria must be met if Federal Credits will be used
  • Takes precedence over state/local regulations
  • Clients may discover historical significance during site analysis. Archaeologicalactivity and proper handling of structures/artifacts must take place.

National Park Service Standards for Preservation

A
  • Use a property as it was historically intended to, or maximize the renditionofdistinctive materials, features, spaces, and spatial relationships if there is achange
  • History character of a property will be retained and preserved. Do notreplace historical materials that are intact or can berepaired
  • A property will be recognized as a physical record of its time, place, and use.
  • Changes to property that are now also considered historical will be preserved(e.g.the minoan columns at Knossos that were painted red as an act of restoration)
  • Distinctive materials/features/finishes/construction or examples of craftsmanshipwill bepersevered
  • Existing condition of historic features will be evaluated to determine theappropriate level of intervention.
  • Chemical/physical treatments will be gentle if absolutely required.
  • Archeological resources will be protected/preserved in place
