Adaptations Flashcards
What do plants need to survive?
- carbon dioxide
- light
- water
- nutrients
What do animals need to survive?
- food
- oxygen
- water
- shelter
- mate
What must animals ensure they are able to do what??
- catch prey: good eyesight, sharp claws, speed
- avoid predators: camouflage, defence
- eat their food: sharp teeth, flat large molars (for veggies)
- survive in extreme conditions
What is an extremophile?
A microorganism which lives in extreme environments. For example a very hot climate or a very cold climate.
Why do animals living in cold conditions have smaller surface area to volume ratio?
To reduce heat loss
Why is having small ears an adaptation of animals living in cold climates?
Because they reduce heat loss
How does a thick waxy cuticle help in deserts?
The waxy layer is waterproof and so prevents water evaporation
How do thick stems help in desert conditions?
They store water so the plant can survive without water for a long period time
How can you measure a change in rainfall?
You use a rain gouge
How can you measure increased air pollution?
Lichens. In polluted areas the lichens will be crusty. In non polluted areas they will be lots of leafy lichens
How can you measure increased water pollution?
By studying invertebrate species ans using oxygen/pH meters
