Adaptation Flashcards
Adaptive Features…
Feature of an organism that is caused by its genes, and that helps it to survive and reproduce in its environment
Physical/morphological Adaptation
Adaptive Features shown in body parts
Ex. Fur on bear, Shape of beak and type of feet
Physiological Adaptation
Adaptive Features shown in body functions
Ex. Venom
Behavioral Adaptation
Adaptive Features shown in behavior
Ex. Hibernation, Migration
Xerophytes
A plant that has adaptive features that help it to survive in an environment where water is scarce
Closed and sunken stomata on the underside of the leaves (Xerophytes)
Less water evaporates
Waxy cuticle (Xerophytes)
Makes leaf waterproof
Hairy leaves (Xerophytes)
Traps layer of moist air and it reduces the diffusion gradient for water vapour from leaf into air so less water vapour diffuses out of the leaf
Smaller surface area for leaves (Xerophytes)
Less water vapour will diffuse out of it
Deep or spreading roots (Xerophytes)
Seek water very deep down in the soil
Hydrophytes
A plant that has adaptive features that helps it to survive in water
Stems and leaf (Hydrophytes)
Have hollow spaces in them filled with air which helps them to float on the top of the water where they can get light for photosynthesis
Stomata on upper and lower (Hydrophytes)
Upper surface to contact air where carbon dioxide comes from the plant uses for photosynthesis
Leaves spread out easily in water (Hydrophytes)
So it gets plenty of sunlight
Roots (Hydrophytes)
Hang in water and sometimes grow into the mud but not deeply
