List some symptoms of separation anxiety disorder.
-distressed when separated from home/attachment figure
-worry about potential harm
-fear of being alone
-nightmares
-phys distress sx
Sx must last at least 4wks in children
When is peak onset of separation AD?
Several dev points incl. entry to kindergarten, between 7-9 and again starting high school
What is the duration of disturbance needed to diagnose selective mutism?
at least 1 month (not limited to first month of school)
What is the onset of selective mutism?
commonly before 5yrs old - but may not come to attention until entry to school (increase interaction + performance tasks)
How may specific phobias be different in children?
Cognitive ideation not prevalent-> don’t recognise their fear is irrational (unlike adults)
How common is it to have more than one phobia?
75% of people fear more than one
What is the gender difference for specific phobia and when is onset?
Onset= 7-11
More frequent in girls 2:1 (girls more likely animal, natural, env phobias)
What major temperamental trait is common in children with Anxiety disorders?
Behavioural inhibition: genetically based, refers to reaction to novel & unfamiliar stimuli. Tend to respond with restraint, distress, avoidance
What is the role of insecure attachment in dev of ADs?
low sensitivity and responsivity to child. Parent doesn’t provide secure based to explore
What is the role of over-anxious, intrusive and protective parenting in dev of ADs?
Hinders autonomy, leads to under-developed competence in handling external env
What factors are important in assessing whether worry is pathological?
- Intensity (reaction in proportion to threat)
- Frequency
- Content (non-threatening)
- Spontaneity (vol control?)
- avoidance (lead to)
- Dev stage
- Nonadaptive & persistent
- Interference (w functioning)
