What types of animals usually get acute rumenal acidosis?
A
Barley beef
Cows that have broken into feed sheds

How does acute rumenal acidosis present?
A
Acute - ataxia, anorexia, dilated pupils
Peracute - severe ataxia or recumbency, blind, severe dehydration
Other signs: rumenal distension, ataxia, diarrhoea, depression, recumbency and shock

How should you treat fairly mild acute acidosis?
A
Feed hay
Antacids - magnesium carbonate / magnesium hydroxide

How should you treat per acute acidosis?
A
RUMENITOMY - most important 5 L of sodium bicarbonate IV Balanced fluids for 12-24h NSAIDs Antibiotics Calcium borogluconate

How can acute acidosis be prevented?
A
Correct mixing of diets
Don’t allow access to feed stores
Slowly introduce new diets over 3 weeks
