Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
What is the aetiology of acute respiratory distress syndrome?
A
Increased permeability of alveolar capillaries leading to fluid accumulation in the alveoli (i.e. non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema).
2
Q
What are the causes of acute respiratory distress syndrome?
A
- Sepsis, pneumonia
- Massive blood transfusion
- Trauma, smoke inhalation
- Acute pancreatitis
3
Q
What is this a presentation of?
Acute and severe dyspnoea and tachypnoea, bilateral lung crackles, low oxygen sats (hypoxaemia).
A
Acute respiratory distress syndrome
4
Q
How is suspected acute respiratory distress syndrome investigated?
A
- FBC, U&Es, LFTs, amylase, clotting, CRP, blood cultures
- Pulmonary artery wedge pressure to confirm non-cardiogenic origin
- CXR
- ABG
5
Q
What is the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome?
A
- Manage in ITU
- Oxygenation/ventilation to treat hypoxia
- Organ support - vasopressors
- Treat underlying cause (e.g. antibiotics)
