Activity No. 11 Flashcards
it is an organic compound that is formed when carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol
Ester
This process typically requires a catalyst to speed the reaction.
Esterification
What was used as a catalyst for this experiment
Concentrated Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
a very dangerous chemical which can cause severe chemical burns when in contact with all human tissues
Sulfuric acid
What will happen when carboxylic acids are esterified (combined w/ an alcohol to form an ester)?
Some of the resulting esters are liquids with fruity scents or flavors
What compound is responsible for the characteristic flavors of fruits
esters

what mechanism is incorporated in the synthesis of fragrant esters
Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution
PROCEDURE:
Step 1(activity #11)
Place the first acid using the specified amount into a dry 10-cm test tube. Then, add 6 drops of the corresponding alcohol and agitate the tube until the contents are well mixed
PROCEDURE:
Step 2 (activity #11)
Add 1 drop of concentrated sulfuric acid. shake the tube contents and place the tube in a beaker of boiling water for 3 mins.
PROCEDURE:
Step 3 (act #11)
After heating, remove the tube from the bath and add 15 drops of water to the tube contents. Note and record the odor of the product.
