to 36.000 cyclist passing through daily. - 63% of all members of the Danish parliament, located in the middle of
Copenhagen, commute daily by bike.
Study: Pedelecs as a physically active transportation mode
Design:
- 20 sedentary commuters were told to commute to work by e-bike at least three times a week for 40 minutes a day over 1 month
- they wore a GPS tracker and a heart-rate monitor
Results:
- after a month of this, health tests showed the subjects has better cardiovascular health, more aerobic capacity, and improved blood sugar control compared to before
Bike Boxes
- bike boxes are marked spaces at intersections that indicate dedicated areas where cyclists can wait when stopped at an intersection
markings through intersections
- increases cyclist visibility, creates more space for them on the road and through intersections
Protected Bike Lanes
- increases safety, quickest way to implement is to install inexpensive and removable plastic bollards
Chemical bike lock
- u shaped lock that has stinking gas inside
- the gas escapes in a cloud if someone attempts to cut the lock
Improved Safety
- increasing the number of cyclists on your streets can save lives. “motorists adjust their behaviour in the presence of people walking and bicycling” leading to a reduction in the rate of collisions between motorists and bicyclists and walkers
European Cyclists Federation
- even with the CO2 emissions of food required to power a bicycle, the ECF study found that - while not emissions free - the bicycle is still the lowest emitter of greenhouse gasses per passenger kilometre traveled.
- emissions from cycling are over 10x lower than those from the passenger car
