Active transport Flashcards
Define active transport
The movement of substances against their concentration gradient - from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution
Describe active transport in root hair cells
Concentration of minerals is higher in the root hair cells than soil around them so root hair cells use active transport to move minerals against their concentration gradient into the root hair cell
What is required for active transport?
Energy from respiration from mitochondria
Where does active transport happen in humans?
Gut
Kidney tubule
Movement of glucose through each
Describe active transport in the gut
Lower concentration of nutrients in the gut but a higher concentration of nutrients in the blood
Allows nutrients to be taken into the blood
