Active transport Flashcards
Active Transport
Movement of materials across the cell membrane that does require energy (ATP)
Low to high concentration
How ATP moves materials
Energy binds specific materials to the carrier protein and ‘‘open’ and ‘close’ the protein
Using ATP to move materials…
Uses energy
Can be controlled and removes waste but gets nutrients
Endocytosis
Used to transport materials into the cell
Cell membrane engulfs an external substance then pinches off forming a vesicle inside the cell
Three types of endocytosis
Pinocytosis - engulfing a liquid
Phagocytosis - engulfing a solid (phagosome which binds to lysosome)
Receptor-mediated - protein receptors trigger endocytosis of a very specific molecule
Exocytosis
Used to transport materials out of the cell - gets rid of waste
Vesicle comes up to cell membrane, phospholipids rearrange and membranes fuse releasing the contents of the vesicle
