Active Listening Flashcards
Why be an active listener?
The reason is active listening is an investment in the relationship. It builds camaraderie and a team spirit that I so appreciate.
What is active listening?
It’s entirely focused attention.
- You and your attention are focused on the other person.
- You are listening so closely that you could summarize back to them the content of what they said and the emotional mood that they are in.
- You empathize with them and validate their experience easy peasy.
What is the impact on the people that you are listening to?
People feel listened to and heard. This allows them to relax. They may even have more nuanced information to add.
Should I use it in all conversations?
You can choose where you use this. E.g: some conversations are about efficiency and getting things done quickly. So you probably don’t need to listen actively in those.
Should I be a passive listener?
No. You should be an engaged conversation partner when you are actively listening. Active listening is not letting someone talk until they run out of things to say it is targeted and focused and time-bound.
How should coaches listen to people
Coaches should listen to understand not to agree or disagree and they are curious and open. For that the focus should be the other person
