Activate 1 Chapter 2 Atoms, Elements and Compounds Flashcards
What is an atom?
Atoms are incredibly tiny particles that make up all substances.
What is an element?
An element cannot be broken into other substances and is made up of one atom only.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is made up of atoms all chemically bonded to each other.
What is a compound?
Compounds are up of two different types of atoms strongly joined together and can be broken down into other substances.
What does a chemical formulae tell you?
A chemical formulae tells you how much atoms are there in a molecule relative to each other.
How many types of atoms are there?
92
Do each type of atom have different properties?
Yes.
Give ten examples of elements.
Any of the elements in the periodic table are fine (e.g. potassium, hydrogen…).
How many atoms are there in NaOH?
3 types of atoms
How many atoms are there in CaCO3?
5
Is O2 a compound?
No, it is a molecule
How do we name compounds which have oxygen and another element in it?
Every compound containing oxygen ends in oxide. If there is one oxygen, mon is put before oxide. if there is two oxygens, di is put before oxide.
How do we name compounds which have a metal and a non metal?
We put the metal’s name first, and then the non-metal name. The non-metal name must end in ide!
What is the name of the compound that has one carbon and one oxygen?
Carbon monoxide
What is the name of the compound which has one silver (a metal) and one chlorine?
Silver chloride
