Action Potentials Flashcards
1
Q
Tetrodotoxin (TTX)
A
Puffer fish toxin that blocks depolarization Na channels
2
Q
Hypocalcemia Effect
A
Destabilizes closed state of Na channels so lowers excitability threshold and causes spasms (doesn’t affect RP)
3
Q
Hypokalemia Effect
A
Hyperpolarizes cell membrane potential, so reduced RP and reducing likelihood of AP. Muscle weakness
4
Q
Hyperkalemia 2 Effects
A
Small [Ko] increase depolarizes, making more susceptible to triggering AP
But larger increase triggers one AP, leaving Na channels inactivated and unable to excite anymore
5
Q
2 Reasons Myelination increases Current Flow
A
Increases R of membrane and decreases capacitance
6
Q
2 Demyelinating Diseases
A
Multiple sclerosis in CNS and Guillian Barre in PNS
