A gravedigger and his companion talk about the cause of Ophelias death. They question whether she should have a Christian burial because her death seems like it was a suicide. They give each other riddles out “doomsday”. Hamlet + Horatio enter and watch the gravediggers work- Hamlet looks at the skulls and wonders who those people are and what they did in their life. Hamlet asks who’s grave he is digging and the gravedigger replies that its not for a man or women because the contents of the grave wont be something living. Hamlet picks up a skull and the gravedigger says that it belonged to Yorick. He realises that all humans no matter how much power they have in this world will all face death. Ophelias funeral starts, Hamlet finally realises who has died and begins to act dramatic- Leartes leaps into Ophelias grave, so does Hamlet- they fight. Gertrude and Claudius declare Hamlet is mad- he storms off, Horatio follows and King reminds Leartes of the revenge plan to keep him calm

Hamlet tells Horatio how he plotted to overcome the kings scheme to have him killed. He replaced the letter with a letter to have R + G killed. He tells Horatio that he has no sympathy who betrayed him and sided with Claudius. He feels sorry for behaving badly with Leartes and says that he wants to be good to Leartes cuz they have been through the same thing. Conversation interrupted by Osric- a foolish courtier who agrees with everything that Hamlet says, even when he contradicts himself. Hamlet and Horatio fight- against Horatio’s advice. Hamlet asks Leartes for forgiveness- ha declines but says he appreciates the effort. They fight and then Gertrude drinks the poisoned wine despite Claudius telling her not to. During the fight they switch swords and Leartes gets hit with his own sword and dies. Leartes confesses to Hamlet that this is all the. Kings doing. Hamlet injures Claudius with the sword and forces him to drink the poison- the king dies. Osric says that Fortinbras is here to fire a volley at the English ambassadors. Hamlet tells Horatio that he is dying- and urges him not to commit suicide and to live to tell the story. Hamlet declares that Fortinbras should be the king of Denmark and dies.
