Polonius sends his servant to Paris, to ask Danish people about Leartes, so he can get them to talk about what Leartes is up to. Ophelia enters- she is scared because of the way Hamlet is acting. Polonius thinks he’s mad for love. Ophelia explains that she rejected Hamlet as Polonius commanded.

King summons Rosencrantz and Guildenstan to find out what’s going on with Hamlet. Polonius enters. He tries to explain that he knows where Hamkets lunacy is coming from. He plans with the king to spy on Hamlet and Ophelia to see what the cause of his lunacy is. Later R and G visit and Hamlet asks why they are here- they say they are here to visit, but Hamlet already knows they are here to find out about him- they confess. The players enter- Hamlet curses himself and says that the players can act so good and he can’t get his motives sorted even though his own father has died. Hamlet plans to set up the king and catch his conscience.
