R and G say they are unable to find the cause of Hamlets lunacy to the king and queen. King and queen agree to see the play this evening. The to be or not to be soliloquy occurs. Hamlet sees Ophelia and she says she wishes to give back the tokens of love she had received from him- as Polonius commanded. Hamlet becomes angry and orders her to to to a nunnery”. Hamlet goes after verbally attacking Ophelia and King says that Hamlets madness is not as a result of his love. He declares Hamlet be sent to England. Polonius thinks Hamlets lunacy is still because of his love so he asks King to send Hamlet to Gertrudes closet after the play- he plans to hide and listen. Claudius agrees.
“How smart a lash that speech hath give my conscience” “O heavy burden” “To be or not to be: that is the question” “Get thee to a nunnery” “ I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious” “all but one shall live” “O woe is me, T’have seen what i have seen, see what i see!” “Madness in great ones must not unmatched go”
Hamlet tells the player about the Change in the play- he tells them to be authentic. Horatio enters and Hamlet praises his character. Hamlet asks Horatio to watch the King in order to catch his conscience. Horatio agrees. Later, Hamlet asks Polonius about his history as an actor and also toments Ophelia with a number of erotic puns. The dumb show starts- storyline is given. Then the show starts and Hamlet gives running commentary + continues to torment Ophelia with sexual references. When the murderer puts poison in the Kings ear the king rises and calls for the lights to be put on. Hamlet had his eyes fixated on Gertrude. The king flees the room and everyone after him- Horatio and Hamlet are alone. R + G tell Hamlet to go to Gertrudes closet and he accuses them of playing with him like a musical instrument. Hamlet agrees to speak daggers into Gertrude.
“I was killed” “you are naught, you are naught” “If she should break it now” “do you think I’m easier to be played on than a pipe” “whose blood and judgement are so equally co-mingled”
King speaks to R + G- shaken about the play he suspects Hamlets madness to be dangerous. Polonius enters and reminds King of plan- promises to tell everything he learned. Polonius leaves. Kings soliloquy starts. Hamlet sees him and contemplates to kill him-decides not to because he doesn’t want him to go straight to heaven
“O my offence is rank, it smells to heaven” “My crown, mines own ambition, and my Queen” “Bow, stubborn knees” “words without thoughts never to heaven go”
Closet scene. Hamlet kills Polonius. Ghost appears. Hamlet “cleanses” mother- gets her on his side.
“Have you forgot me?” “Your husbands brothers wife” “O Hamlet, speak no more” “rank sweat of an enseamed bed” “these words like daggers” “O speak to me no more” “he’s mad”
