Act 3 Scene 2 Flashcards
What is the most significant aspect of this scene?
It shows the state of the relationship between Macbeth and LM, and how their roles have reversed since the beginning of the play; LM feels the strain of their deed.
“make our faces vizards to our hearts, disguising what they are”
This is the theme of appearance and reality, and once again highlights the role reversal of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth; he has become much more duplicitous and aligns with the way of committing evil while posing as innocent.
“Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck”
Macbeth makes his plans without Lady Macbeth’s input and hides them from her, further exemplifying the extent to which their roles have been inverted.
“We have scorch’d the snake, not kill’d it”
Macbeth uses a metaphor to depict the various threats that he still faces to his power, despite Duncan being killed.
“O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife!”
Exclamation and zoomorphic metaphor that exemplifies the mental suffering Macbeth is plagued with.
