How does the Cardinal react to Julia’s tears?

A

“Why do you weep? Are tears your justification?” - is she trying to redeeming herself? he doesn’t believe that they can be redeemed but he doesn’t take it seriously.
He satirically invokes the Protestant idea of justification by faith alone, suggesting that Julia, without changing her behaviour, hopes to be redeemed.
