Act 2 Scene 2 Flashcards
How does Bosola respond to the accusation of the old women that he is “still abusing women”?
“Who, I? No - only by the way, now and then, mention your frailties”
How is Bosola a little bit clueless about the Duchess’ pregnancy?
“[Aside] If that these apricots should be poisoned now without my knowledge?” - he thinks the apricots maybe were poisoned without him knowing. The logical explanation is that she was pregnant.
How do the servants portray misogynistic behaviour?
“There was taken even now a Switzer in the Duchess’s bedchamber… with a pistol in his great codpiece!” - its a euphemism - the Duchess is a whore.
“Who would have searched his codpiece?”
“True - if he had kept out of the ladies’ chambers - and all moulds of his buttons were leaden bullets” - thinks that women are sexual.
How does Antonio take action and lie to get people to stay away from the Duchess’ chamber?
“Each officer be locked into his chamber till the sun-rising”
How does Delio warn Antonio of being superstitious? How does this link to later and what does this foreshadow?
“Tis but the shadow of your fear, no more. How superstitiously we mind our evils! The throwing down salt or crossing of a hare, bleeding at nose… are of power to daunt whole man in us.” - He mentions the nose bleed which links to when Antonio gets one later. Foreshadows the death of them all.
How does Cariola say to Antonio at the end of the scene when everyone has left?
“Sir, you are the happy father of a son.”
