Act 2 Scene 3 Flashcards
Bosola finds out about the pregnancy
How does Bosola add to how clueless he is after the Duchess gives birth?
“Sure I did hear a woman shriek… and the sound came, if I received it right, from the Duchess’ lodgings”
How does Antonio emphasise the theme of Deception when talking to Bosola? How does Bosola show he can’t put two and two together?
B - “Methinks tis very cold, and yet you sweat. You look wildly”
A - “I have been setting a figure for the Duchess’s jewels”
A - “Tis rather to be questioned what design, when all men were commanded to their lodgings, makes you a nightwalker”
How does this scene take place in the RSC version? What is the importance?
It takes place in the darkness - emphasises the theme of deception and having to hide something.
What happens to Antonio suddenly and how does he react to it? How does this relate back to the previous scene? What does it foreshadow?
“[aside] my nose bleeds!… Two letters that are wrought here for my name are drowned in blood” - links to Delio’s speech about superstitions. It provides the image of bad omens and something bad happening to them. The fact he says it aside shows a lack of trust.
What does Bosola pick up that Antonio drops? What does it read and what does this foreshadow?
“A child’s nativity calculated?… signifies short life… doth threaten violent death” - bad omens. Something bad will happen to the child.
What does Bosola say he will do with this new information he has obtained?
“I’ll send a letter that shall make her brothers’ galls o’erflow their livers.”
