Part of the overall Project Management Information System, used to ensure that work gets performed at the right time and in the right sequence. It may be an informal email sent by the project manager to a functional manager, or a formal system to get an assigned resource released to complete scheduled work.

An automated system that serves as a repository for info and a tool to help with communication and tracking. It supports the project from beginning to end. It is usually software, but will often interface with manual systems. It contains the Configuration Management System and the Work Authorization System. It is considered an enterprise environmental factor since it is part of the environment in which the project is performed.
