A

What does VAWSEEPO stand for?

A

VICTIM - Get particulars of victim/s and ask them TEDS question and 5WH +H questions. Seek corroboration, Inform victim of victim support services.

APPRECIATION -
• what you want to achieve
• factors relevant to achieving your aim
• alternative courses of action open to you
• a plan outlining the best course of action open to you.

WITNESS/S -
• As with victims, obtain their full particulars.
• Ask TEDS and 5WH + H questions.
• Seek corroboration. Note or seize evidence.
• Interview and where appropriate, take statement.
• If time is short and a full and detailed statement is needed arrange a time
for this. (This is not always practical on initial attendance at the scene).

SCENE -
Identify the scene (or scenes), including entries or exits. Keep scene
boundaries wide. They can always be brought in later if need be, when
evidence has been located.
Use police staff or members of the public to help guard the scene, if necessary.
Remember Scene guard FCP and PRBPAB

EXHIBITS -
• draw a sketch plan in your notebook of where each is located
• consider photographing them in situ, if possible
• using gloves, place them in plastic bags, paper envelopes or boxes
• seal and label each packaged exhibit with a description of the article, the
date, the place located and the name of the finder
• secure them in the boot of your car or other safe place.
• when back at the police station, prepare a POL 268 for them and hand
them in to the exhibits store
• take steps to avoid cross-contamination

ELEMENTS -
Identify what offence has been committed and establish that all the elements
for that offence are present.
Work out how you can prove each element; for example, in the case of
intentional damage, the victim’s statement could prove the intent by
describing the offender’s actions.

POWERS -
• arrest, detain, search and seize
• search pursuant to legislation
• enter premises pursuant to legislation.

OFFENDER -
Decide whether to warn, report or arrest the offender(s). If:
• warning or reporting, ensure you verify their particulars
• arresting:
− tell them what they are being arrested for
− advise caution/rights
− where appropriate, conduct a preliminary search incidental to arrest.

What does PRBPAB stand for?

A

PREVENT unauthorised people entering the scene.
- Residents, public, news media, unauthorised police members including senior ranking.

RECORD in your notebook details of anyone entering the scene.
- Name, Designation, Reason for visit, Time of entering, Time of leaving.

BRIEF authorised people.
- Ensure authorised people are aware of enrty and exit point, and the route to be taken while on the scene.

PROMPTLY report and record any suspicious activity.
- Report any suspicious activity and record it.

AVOID contaminating or interfering with the scene.
- For example, do not use the toilet or telephone.

BE aware of any animals and remove them from the scene if possible.
- For example, A cat could eat body tissue or contaminate the scene.
