AMP

A

AMP is the abbreviation of the Ampere.

Fun Facts about the Ampere (Not on test)

  • Ampere is the measure of flowing electrons, specifically an ampere is the flow of one Coulomb per second (A Coulomb is 6.241*10^18 electrons).
  • The ampere is named after Andre Marie Ampere (1775-1836), whom first theorized the existence of an “electrodynamic molecule” in 1827 (electrodynamic means the electron is responsible for both electric and magnetic fields).
  • Dr. Ampere conceived electrodynamics in 1820 when he witnessed Francois Arago’s demonstration of Hans Christian Orsted’s experiment at the French Academy of Sciences.
  • Orsted was the first to notice electromagnetism. On 21 April 1820, during a lecture, Ørsted noticed a compass needle deflected from magnetic north when an electric current from a battery was switched on and off, confirming a direct relationship between electricity and magnetism. This was a peculiar phenomenon because up until this point electrical current was only known to produce bolts of lightening and static charge.
  • Andre Marie Ampere’s experiment proving electromagnetism consisted of two identical wires connected to batteries with identical voltage and reversed polarities. The force of deflection could be calculated based on the tension in the wires and the distance traversed. This force demonstrated the strength of a moving electric field, but the puzzling physics problem of an “electrodynamic molecule” would not be sorted out until 1864 by James Clerk Maxwell.
  • James Clerk Maxwell proved the existence of the electron thirty three years before the particle was finally observed by J. J. Thomson in 1897.
