Acronymns/ Memorization Flashcards
Aeronautical Decision Making Acronym for emergencies
DECIDE
Detect - a change in one of the 5 p’s
Estimate - if emergency, abnormal situation, or timely reaction is required
Choose- Immediate action items, then head work. Crew management
Identify - actions that can control the change.
Do - the necessary action, prioritize in order of urgency
Evaluate - the effects of the action. Any remaining risks. Re-evaluate situation and repeat decide model as necessary.
Clouds lifting method
COFT
Convergence - converging air at surface that shoots up
Orographic - when air is forced upwards by the surface of the earth
Frontal - warm moist air being pushed up by cool dry air
Thermal - moisture is heated in by the sun so it rises
What is the lost procedure?
5 C’s
Climb
Confess
Communicate
Comply
Circle/ conserve
What are the different SUA’s?
How should we behave around each one?
MCPRAWN
AIM 3-4
14 CFR part 73
Moa - VFR exercise extreme caution, IFR can fly through when routed and cleared by ATC
CFA’s - Ground will stop operations
Prohibited - Aircraft are prohibited
Restricted - unusual activity that can be invisible to aircraft. “No persons may operate an aircraft within…. During the time of operation
Alert Area - Unusual activity or a high volume of training in the area
Warning area - 3 nm from the coast line, can fly but not recommended
NSA’s (national security area) - asked not to fly through == DON’T
What are the required Inspections for an airplane.
AAV1ATE
CFR 91. 409
AD’s - urgent and required (DRS.FAA.GOV)
Annual
VOR - 30 days (IFR) 91.171
100 hours - For hire
Altimeter and pitot static system (24 months) 91.411
Transponder (24 months) 91.413
ELT (12 months, 1/2 batt, 1 hour of use) 91.207
Single Pilot crew resource management (SRM) to help manage and ensure a safe flight. P’s
5 P’s
Pilot - IMSAFE
Plane - knowledge enough of systems to detect a problem
Plan - NWKRAFT
Passengers - Passenger breif
Programming- G1000, handheld equipment

G - Generator
R - 2 way Radio
A - Altimeter (sensitive)
B - Ball inclinometer
C - Clock (mounted h, m, s)
A - Attitude
R - Rate of turn
D - Directional Gyro
D - DME over fl 240 or suitable RNAV equipment
What are the 8 types of illusions in flight with related to spacial disorientation?
ICEFLAGS
I - Inversion - transition from a climb to straight and level feel like tumbling backwards.
C - Coriolis - In steady turn and move your head. Dizzying.
E - Elevator - Updraft feels like a climb
F - False Horizon - something else looks like the horizon
L - Leans - slow enter into imperceptible turn, then that feels level.
A - Autokinesis - stare at a light and it starts to move.
G - Graveyard spin/spiral - Start with the leans but loose altitude, try to recover in a bank and makes the situation worse.
S - Somatogravic Illusion - Acceleration feels like a climb
IFR Lost Comms
Far 91.185(c)
Route
A - Assigned
V - Vectors
E - Expected
F - Filed
Altitude
M - Minimum IFR altitude
E - Expected
A - Assigned
Leave clearance limit
@ IAF - Shoot approach, hold until EFC time.
@ Airport - fly there then go to IAF and shoot approach @ eta time
What are the Magnetic Compass Errors?
VDMONA
V- Variation - east is negative, west is positive
D- Deviation- compass correction card
M - Magnetic Dip
O- Oscillation
N - Northerly turning errors (UNOS)
A - Acceleration Errors (ANDS)
Checklist that categorizes risk for a go-no-go decision.
PAVE
P - Pilot - (General health, IMSAFE, Proficiency, currency)
A - Aircraft - Airworthiness, AAV1ATE, equipment, performance)
V - Environment- Weather hazards, terrain, airports/runways, other conditons
E - External Pressures - getthereitis
What are the types of Fog?
Radiation - (ground fog) low flat surfaces on calm nights
Advection - low layer of moist warm air blows over
Upslope - Warm stable air is forces upslope to saturation
Evaporation - Steam fog (lake), Frontal (rain)
Ice - Sublimates into ice crystals. Low wind
To maintain currency for IFR flights you need to do what?
6 HITS in the preceding 6 months of the flight.
Far 61.57
6 instrument approaches - Location, type, safety pilot (if required)
H- Holding procedures and tasks
I - Intercepting and..
T - Tracking courses through navigational electronic
S - Systems
If you are past the 6 months
- you have an additional 6 months to regain currency with a safety pilot
Past the additional 6 months
- Instrument proficiency check
Mandatory IFR reports
MARVELOUSVFRC500
M- Missed approach
A - Airspeed +- 10 kts or 5% change
R - Reaching a holding fix (Time and altitude)
V- VFR on top altitude changes
E - ETA change of +-3 minutes (NON Radar)
L - Leave a holding fix
O- Outer Marker inbound (NON Radar)
U- Unforcasted weather
S - Safety of flight/ Emergency
V - Vacating an altitude or flight level
