Acromioclavicular Joint Flashcards
What is the acromioclavicular joint?
A weak, plane synovial articulation.
What is the acromioclavicular joint formed by?
The lateral part of the acromion of the scapula.
The articular surfaces of the acromioclavicular joint are covered by ____ and separated by ____.
covered by fibrocartilage; separated by an incomplete wedge-shaped articular disc.
A sleeve-like relatively loose ____ of the joint capsule is attached to the margins of the articular surfaces.
Fibrous layer
A ______ lines the internal surface of the fibrous layer of the capsule.
synovial membrane.
How is the joint capsule strengthened?
Superiorly by fibers of the trapezius.
What is the AC ligament and how is it strengthened?
A fibrous band extending from the acromion to the clavicle, and strengthens the AC joint superiorly.
Where does most of the strength of the acromioclavicular joint come from and what does it do?
The costoclavicular ligament; it maintains the integrity and prevents the acromion from being driven under the clavicle, even when the AC joint is separated.
What is the coracoclavicular ligament?
A strong, extra-articular ligament located several cm from the AC joint which anchors the clavical to the coracoid process of the scapula.
What \attaches to the root of coracoid process?
The apex of the vertical Conoid Ligament
Trapezoid ligament.
Is nearly horizontal and is attached to the superior surface of the coracoid process and extends laterally ad posteriorly to the trapezoid line on the inferior surface of the clavicle.
In addition to augmenting the AC joint, the coracoclavicular ligament does what?
provides the means by which the scapula and free limb are suspended by the clavicle.
