What is melanocytic nevus?
benign neoplasm, localized proliferation of cells from the neural crest cells
What are the most common of all human tumors?
melanocytic nevi
What population often develops melanocytic nevi?
white adults
More commin in women
What is the clinical appearance of melanocytic nevi lesions?
Circubscribed tan to brown popular lesion; Usually less than .5cm in diameter ; Covered with intact mucosa
Where are melanocytic nevi most often located?
Located most often on the hard palate
How do melanocytic nevi lesions change over time?
Proliferative over a period of years to produce slightly elevated sfot papule with a relatively smooth surface (compoun nevus)
What is the histopathologic feature of melanocytic nevi?
Nests of melanocytic nevus cells along the basal layer of epithelium
Collection of melanocytic nevus cells within the lamina propria
Tx for melanocytic nevi?
No tx necessary unless for esthetic purposes or shows clinical evidence of a change in size or color
What can arise from longstanding or irritated nevi?
skin melanoma
Biopsy for melanocytic nevi?
YES bc it resembles early melanoma
Is chance of recurrence high in surgically removed nevi?
No, unlikely
