Acquired cardiac pathology Flashcards
1
Q
From which aortic branch do the coronary arteries emerge?
A
1st
2
Q
Layers of coronary arteries
A
- Adventitia
- Muscle
- Intima (inner, endothelium, connective tissue and internal elastic lamina)
3
Q
What is atherosclerosis?
A
Luminal narrowing due to plaque build up
4
Q
Vasculitis
A
Inflammation of coronary arteries
5
Q
Investigating heart pain
A
- ECG
- Blood markers - troponins, cardiac enzymes
- Cardiac CT or angiography
6
Q
4 heart valves and their locations
A
RHS: tricuspid separates RA and RV, pulmonary valve between RV and PA
LHS: mitral separates LA and LV, aortic separates LV and Ao
7
Q
Incompetent valves
A
Regurgitation - e.g. due to acute muscle rupture
8
Q
Aortic stenosis
A
- Separates LV and aorta
- Makes it difficult to pump blood into systemic circulation
- Left ventricular hypertrophy occurs when muscle of LV increases to overcome resistance
- Sx: chest pain, tiredness, palpitation, heart murmur
9
Q
Symptoms of conduction defect
A
- Palpitations
- Syncope
- Thromboembolism
- Sudden death
10
Q
Heart muscle pathology
A
- Can be due to ischaemia, cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic/dilated heart muscles
- LHS heart failure = pulmonary oedema
- RHS heart failure = peripheral oedema/hepatomegaly/ascites
- Stasis of blood, abnormalities of vessel wall and abnormalities of blood composition are Virchow’s triad
