Acids, Bases & Salts Flashcards
Define : Acids
An acid is a compound which when dissolved in water yields hydronium ions as the only positively charged ions.
Define : Bases
A base is a compound which reacts with hydronium ions of an acid to give salt and water only.
Define : Alkalis
An alkali is a compound which when dissolved in water yields hydroxyl ions as the only negatively charged ions.
Define : Organic Acids
Acids derived from plants.
Define : Inorganic Acids
Acids derived from minerals.
Define : Hydracids
Acids containing hydrogen and a non-metallic element other than oxygen.
Define : Oxyacids
Acids containing hydrogen, another element and oxygen.
Example : Organic Acids
Citric, Oxalic, Tartaric, Acetic Acids.
Example : Inorganic Acids
HCl, H2SO4, HNO3
Example : Hydracids
HCl, HBr, HI
Example : Oxyacids
HNO3, H2SO4
What does the strength of an acid depend on?
It depends on the concentration of the hydronium ions present in an aqueous solution of an acid.
Define : Strong Acids
Examples : Strong Acids
Define : Weak Acids
