Acids And Bases Flashcards
What is a base?
A proton acceptor. When in a solution they grab hydrogen ions from water molecules
How do acids react with metals and carbonates?
By releasing hydrogen gas. The metal atoms donate electrons to the H+ ions in the acid solution. Metal atoms are oxidised and H+ ions are reduced.
What is produced when an acid reacts with a carbonate?
Carbon dioxide + water
What happens when acids react with bases and alkalis?
Acids produce H+ ions when dissolved in water and bases produce OH- ions. Acids and bases neutralise each other.
What is an acid?
A proton donor. They release hydrogen ions when they are mixed with water
