Acids and bases Flashcards
pH scale goes from
0 to 14
Acid + base =
Salt + water
What is an acid
A substance that forms aqueous solutions with a pH of less than 7, and forms H+ ions in water
What is a base
A substance with a pH greater than 7, that neutralises and acid
What is an alkali
A base that dissolves in water to form a solution with a pH greater than 7, and forms OH- ions in water
Titration practical
To find the conc of some …:
1. Using a … and a pipette filler add a … volume of the … to a conical … and add …-3 drops of …
2. Use a f… to fill a burette at … level, with an acid of a known …, and record the …
3. Using the b… add the a… to the alkali …
4. The indicator is … in alkaline condition and … in acidic conditions
5. Record the f… volume of a… in the burette and s… it from the initial v…
6. To increase a… remove … results and … the experiment
To find the conc of some alkali:
1. Using a pipette and a pipette filler add a set volume of the alkali to a conical flask and add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein
2. Use a funnel to fill a burette at eye level, with an acid of a known concentration, and record the volume
3. Using the burette add the acid to the alkali slowly
4. The indicator is pink in alkaline condition and colourless in acidic conditions
5. Record the final volume of acid in the burette and subtract it from the initial volume
6. To increase accuracy remove anomalous results and repeat the experiment
What is a strong acid
-they ionise completely in water
-all acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
What are weak acids
-they do not full ionise in solution
-only a small proportion of acid particles dissociate to release H+ ions
What is pH a measure of
The concentration of H+ ions in a solution
For every decrease of 1 on the pH scale how much does the concentration of H+ ion increase
By a factor of 10
Acid + metal oxide =
