Acids and Bases Flashcards
pH
A measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is
pH scale (numbers)
0-14
What properties do low numbers on the pH scale have?
They are acidic
What properties do high numbers on the pH scale have?
They are alkaline
Where on the pH scale do neutral substances lie.
7
Where would pure water lie on the pH scale?
7
The two ways we measure pH?
- Through an indicator
- pH probe
What is a very common type of indicator?
Universal indicator
What is an indicator?
A group of chemical dyes that change colour depending on the pH
Benefit of pH probe in comparison to indicator
Can be much more accurate and precise.
What is an acid?
A substance that forms an aqueous solution with a pH less than 7
What is a base?
Any substance with a pH greater than 7
What is the name of a reaction between an acid and a base?
Neutralization reaction
What will be produced from a reaction between an acid and a base?
Salt and water
What should the pH of the products be (reaction between an acid and a base)
7
