Acids and bases Flashcards
According to arrhenius theory what is an acid
a compound that supplies hydrogen atoms ( H+) in an aqueous solution
According to arrhenius theory what is a base/ alkali
a compound that produces hydroxide ions in an aqueous soliton ( OH-)
What is a limitation of arrhenius theory
cannot explain weak base ammonia which releases hydroxide but not OH-
What is a strong vs weak acid and alkali
-strong completely disassociate into ions and (completely ionise to give H+ in acids)
- weak only partially disassociates into ions
When pH increases by 1 how much does the molarity increase
10x
If an acid is 1M what is the concentration of H+
1
What is the pH range for acids
0-7
low pH indicates a stronger acid
What is the pH range for bases
7-14
higher pH indicates a stronger base
What does the brønsted-lowry theory say about acids and bases
- acid: a proton (H+) donor
- base: a proton acceptor
an atom that acts as bith an acid and base together is called amphoteric
